Dr. Gowda Cosmetic Surgery Solutions - Otoplasty

An ear tuck procedure is technically known as an Otoplasty which is a surgical procedure to set prominent ears closer to the head and to reduce the size of the large ears. This usually starts at a young age and can occasionally occur in adult hood as well. The procedure can be done in an office setting or in the hospital depending on insurance company guidelines. In most circumstances Insurance companies provide coverage as this is considered a congenital deformity. The surgery could be done under local anesthesia with or without sedation.

The majority of the time, the surgery is performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14. Usually, ears are fully grown by the age of four or five, or possibly earlier. When performed at this age there is less teasing and ridiculing the child may be subjected to. Ear surgery in adults is also possible. There is generally no additional risk associated with ear surgery in older patients; however ear cartilage may be a little stiffer in older patients and may be an issue at times.

There are several ways to perform this surgery. Dr. Gowda prefers to do the surgery through an incision behind the ear, weakening the cartilage in the front and bending it over, multiple sutures are then placed to achieve a greater degree of permanency and lessen the recurrence of the problem. The cartilage is sculpted and bent backwards towards the head and permanent sutures are placed. Occasionally these permanent sutures may give rise to minor problems such as small pimples. Postoperatively, a head band must be worn for four to six weeks at night.
